What if your pet got hurt or sick?

Like our own health crises, pets' medical emergencies never happen when you expect them. Many times, an unexpected vet bill means a big debt or drained savings. Or even saying no to treatment. Pet insurance reimburses you for covered veterinary bills, so you can focus more on your pet's care—not the cost.

What does pet insurance cover?

Veterinary pet insurance typically covers pets for injuries and illnesses. With ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, you can also cover your pet for wellness care, hereditary and congenital conditions, alternative therapies and behavioral issues.

Coverage for Dogs and Cats

An ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan can help you manage the costs of everything from unexpected incidents to preventive care.

Accidents + Illnesses

Many pet insurance plans only cover accidents and illnesses. We suggest the Complete Coverage Plan through Hartville Pet Health Insurance.

Accident coverage is for all kinds of injuries and emergencies related to accidents, like broken bones, bite wounds, toxic exposures, swallowed objects, and burns. Illness coverage is for conditions such as cancer, diabetes, ear infections, upset stomach, urinary issues, and hyperthyroidism. We also cover dental illnesses, including gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Preventive Care

You can add a preventive care coverage option to your plan at a low additional cost. This coverage includes services to help prevent your pet from getting sick, such as annual exams, vaccines, flea and heartworm prevention, yearly dental cleanings, and more. All options have a list of covered services and reimburse scheduled amounts for each service.

Chronic and Ongoing Conditions

Chronic and ongoing conditions can be covered by an ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plan. These are conditions that need care across multiple plan periods, such as allergies, diabetes, and cancer.

Hereditary and Congenital Conditions

Coverage is available for hereditary and congenital conditions. These are conditions pets are born with or are predisposed to getting through their breed.

Alternative Therapies

You can also get coverage for alternative therapies, including acupuncture, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, rehabilitative therapy, hydrotherapy, and low-level laser therapy to treat a covered condition.

Behavioral Issues

Behavioral issues, like excessive licking, separation anxiety, or destructive chewing, can be difficult for pets and disruptive for families, which is why we offer behavioral coverage. It includes consultations, exams, lab testing, and prescription medications to diagnose, treat, and correct behavioral problems.

What's Not Covered

All pet insurance plans have some exclusions.

Here are some exclusions you should note. You can find a full list of exclusions and coverage details at - sample plans.

Inhumane Treatments

This pet insurance doesn't cover elective procedures opposed by The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®, such as tail docking, ear cropping, and claw removal.

Pre-Existing Conditions

No pet insurance plan covers pre-existing conditions. Pre-existing conditions are those that occur before coverage begins or during a waiting period, even if they haven't been formally diagnosed or treated by a veterinarian. However, the plan will no longer consider a condition to be pre-existing if it’s cured and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days.

Miscellaneous Exclusions

These exclusions include the costs of breeding or pregnancy, boarding, time or travel to a clinic, vaccination tags, grooming or supplies, experimental procedures, organ transplants, and holistic, homeopathic, or herbal supplies.

Know Before You Buy

Pet insurance can help you afford quality veterinary care for your pet. But which provider is right for you? Here are 6 questions to ask any pet insurance provider.

1. How much does the plan cost?

A pet insurance plan should give you the right amount of coverage at a price that fits your budget. The Pet Health Insurance Program we offer provides options to customize your deductible and reimbursement percentage, so your plan is more affordable.

2. What will affect your reimbursements?

Avoid plans that limit payouts by using incident deductibles or exam fee exclusions.

3. Is preventive care coverage available?

Choose a provider that offers coverage for important preventive care, which can help your pet live a long and healthy life. The Pet Health Insurance Program we offer allows you to add preventive care options to your plan at a low additional cost.

4. How much experience does the provider have?

The Hartville Pet Health Insurance Program is one of the oldest and largest pet insurance providers in the US and the only strategic partner for pet insurance of the ASPCA®. They have been providing pet insurance plans to US consumers since 1997, and they have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (2016).

5. What do pet health insurers ask you and your veterinarian to do?

The Hartville ASPCS Pet Health Insurance Program does not require any exams to enroll your pet or continue coverage. They also don’t require vaccines for your pet to have coverage for certain conditions.

6. Do you have the option of being reimbursed or having the vet paid directly?

The Hartville ASPCS Pet Health Insurance Program allows you the option of paying the vet and being reimbursed by the carrier or if your vet allows it, the carrier can pay the vet directly so you only have to pay the deductible.  Some Pet Insurance Programs only allow for reimbursement and others only allow the vet to be paid. We believe you should have the option.
